Financial Education Workshop Held for Elementary School Students Learning About Money with Sumitomo Mitsui Card & the Value of Work Through Crew Work Experience

On Monday, October 14, 2024, Universal Studios Japan, in collaboration with corporate marketing partner Sumitomo Mitsui Card Co., Ltd., hosted a financial education workshop for elementary school students living in children's homes. The event aimed to help them develop the financial literacy necessary for navigating society.

This was the second event in the series and focused not only on how to use money but also on understanding the importance of earning it through work, achieved through a new “Crew Work Experience.”

The children explored the wide variety of jobs available in the world and the rewards that come with them.

This experience encouraged them to reflect on their own interests and strengths, prompting questions like:
“What do I enjoy doing? What am I good at? What kind of job do I want in the future?”

The workshop welcomed 123 fourth- to sixth-grade students from children’s homes in Osaka Prefecture. Through this original program developed by USJ and Sumitomo Mitsui Card, participants enjoyed learning about money, which is often considered to be a difficult topic.

In the first-ever “Crew Work Experience,” crew members from seven different divisions introduced children to their roles and responsibilities.

The children gained a deeper understanding of the importance of work through unique experiences only possible at USJ. These included performing as entertainers, patrolling the Park to ensure safety, displaying and selling merchandise in shops, and even applying rust and aged paint to help create an immersive themed environment.

At the end of the event, the children received gift cards as compensation for their work and had the opportunity to spend the money they earned at restaurants and shops within the Park.

Participating children expressed an interest in tracking their spending, sharing comments such as:
“I will think more carefully about how I spend my money before making a purchase.”
“I worked on studio acoustics. At first, I wasn’t sure what to do, but as I practiced, I improved. By the end, I felt confident!”

The event was also a meaningful experience for the crew members who participated.

Crew members leading the workshop shared their thoughts:
“This was my first time, but I was happy to teach the children about USJ.”

“CSR activities don’t directly generate revenue, but they are incredibly important. I felt this event was aligned with our daily ‘NO LIMIT!’ initiatives.”

USJ also reinforced its CSR slogan, “LOVE HAS NO LIMIT,” through this financial education workshop for elementary school students. We remain committed to social contribution activities that help expand children’s potential, believing that each child—who will shape the future—has NO LIMIT!
